2084: Adobe Stock and OpenAI Lead the Way in AI Generated Images and 3D Modeling
Exploring the frontier
Adobe Stock recently announced that they will be allowing the sale of AI generated images on their website. This is a big step towards these AI models moving further and further into society, and as I say, the AI timeline is measured in months, not years.
In addition, OpenAI decided to throw their(3D generated) hat into the ring, and released their own open source model for generating 3D point clouds and models, Point-E. The code is here, and while it’s still early days, its looking pretty good. As far as I know, this is the first public open source model. Correct me if I’m wrong, I seem to remember reading something about Stable Diffusion doing something, but then again the community around Stable Diffusion is getting so big that I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s well worth checking out if you have the time.
I also read an interesting essay, which was about the difference between efficiency and robustness. It reminded me a lot of the book Antifragile, in its emphasis on sometimes doing inefficient but robust things, so that when shocks happen, there is enough spare capacity to adapt to the changing circumstances. Just as how you should never let your car rev all the way to the red, you should never organize yourself in such a way that there’s nothing left if you really need to push it. Sometimes 80% is better than 100%. Even in ML this is true. Sometimes you have to add noise to your data just to make sure that your models don’t get complacent and overfit.
But anyways, exciting things happening today, as they are everyday. I can’t wait for 2084, the technologies coming out indicate to me that we’re on a wave thats going higher and higher.
