Engineers are notorious for not making eye contact. There is an old joke I heard: “how do you tell the difference between an extroverted and an introverted engineer? An extroverted engineer looks at your shoes.” And to some extent this is true, due to the great rule of "you become good at what you focus on”, which is why given that mastering the fundamental forces of the universe takes a fair amount of studying, engineers are not known for their mastery of social niceties.
Nvidia, being a premier engineering compan, has however, come up with a solution. In their latest version of their recording software, Broadcast, they have added an AI that makes your eyes look they’re maintaining eye contact, while your eyes could be anywhere else. It is super cool, and super convincing - in some of the video demos I genuinely could not tell initially, although the staring made it a lot more obvious. With ChatGPT to do small talk and ever better text to speech models, it won’t be long before the most introverted nerd can talk on the same level as the most extroverted people with proper eye contact too.
Beyond Nvidia’s cool tech, there is also a short paper I saw, which uses a Text To Video model to generate a fully dynamic scene which can be viewed from any angle(they call it a “4D realization”), with the use of NeRF fields too. The paper is pretty cool and has a lot more details in it. I’m excited for the future tho - it sounds like it could make animation so much easier.
